Youth in the La Ronge area will have the chance to explore their talents at an upcoming Youth Music Camp.
This will be the third year that the Community Arts Mentorship Program (CAMP) hosts the annual camp free of charge.
CAMP is a non-profit organization in the province that focuses on providing arts experiences, mentorship, and training opportunities in remote and under-served communities.
“The north gets overlooked so much for these opportunities, thats why it’s so important for CAMP to deliver programming to underserved and remote communities, because the opportunities are few in northern Saskatchewan and we see the need for more programming like this to happen,” explained Managing Director of CAMP, LJ Tyson.
The Youth Music Camp has grown every year since it started. CAMP has the goal to see around 30 youth at the camp this year but would like to host as many as possible.
“The students will be participating in guitar, ukulele, piano, vocal, keyboard and fiddle lessons,” said Tyson.
Something that makes the camp unique is that the youth get to create their own original piece of music by the end of the five days. Below is a link to an original song that youth in Beauval produced with the help of CAMP.
“We really let the kids lead the instruction, that’s why it’s so important for us to create an original piece of music during our camps, so that the kids can feel a personal connection with music rather than just learning from a YouTube tutorial or a book,” explained Tyson.
The camp will be held from July 14-18 at the Senator Myles Venne School and is open to youth in grades 5 to 12.
All instruments, snacks, and lunch are provided, and the camp will wrap up with a special performance and feast on July 18.
