TRC Prepares To Probe Residential School Deaths

Monday, March 08, 2010 at 15:43

The research director for the Truth and Reconciliation Commission says the investigation into what happened to thousands of children who went missing or died while at residential schools will hopefully provide survivors with answers and perhaps some closure.

Trent University history professor John Milloy says the TRC has been given some leads to unmarked graveyards where bodies could be located.

Milloy says the research will require poring over numerous documents, as well as taking tens of thousands of statements.

He says because this work has never been undertaken, there isn't really an estimate of how many children died or went missing during their time at residential schools.

Redundant FFMC Advisory Committee Eliminated

Monday, March 08, 2010 at 15:39

The federal government is officially doing away with an advisory committee to the Freshwater Fish Marketing Corporation.

The elimination of the 15-member committee is part of some administrative housework Ottawa is doing on federal agencies, commissions and boards.

According to Department of Fisheries and Oceans spokesman Kevin Hill, this particular commitee has not been in use for about two decades.

Hill says the committee was originally meant to provide a voice for the fishers, which is no longer necessary since the FFMC's board is now made up of those same fishers.

New Aboriginal Body Created In Energy Sector

Monday, March 08, 2010 at 15:32

A new group has been formed to aid First Nations in power and energy development.

The National Aboriginal Energy and Power Association is based in Vancouver and already is planning to hold an inaugural conference in the fall.

Its founders say oil and gas opportunities are ripening for several Aboriginal communities across the land and they want to help foster that development.

Chairman Bob Joseph says Canada's history is littered with examples of how not to develop natural resources, and his group wants to change all that.

He says the association was formed after some Aboriginal communities expressed a desire to get more expertise about power production, transmission and oil and gas.
