Whitefish Reserve Man Sentenced for Sexual Assault

A man from the Big River First Nation’s Whitefish reserve has been sentenced to just over a year in prison for the sexual assault of a 13-year-old girl.

The incident happened in the early months of 2001 before the body of a baby, believed to be the man’s, was found in the woods outside the girl’s home in October.

The girl was charged with infanticide over the incident and served a conditional sentence.

The 21-year-old man was convicted in Cree court.
