A newly-elected Aboriginal leader says she hopes to convince more First Nations and Metis people that they should vote in the next provincial election.

Angie Merasty of the Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation was voted president of the Aboriginal New Democrats of Saskatchewan during the party’s recent convention.

She says the group is designed to give Aboriginal voters a bigger say in issues affecting their constituencies and communities.

Merasty says she hopes to raise awareness in the coming months about the need to vote.

Her group plans to travel around the province spreading that message.
