Band Office Protest Underway in Pelican Narrows

A number of residents in Pelican Narrows are staging a sit-in at the Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation’s band office in the community.

The protesters have been there since Sunday night.

They are demanding the band evenly share the proceeds of a recent gas and tobacco tax settlement reached with the provincial government.

Gertie Dorion is one of the people leading the sit-in.

She says all the residents want is to receive the same cash settlement that was recently awarded to residents in Southend.

Dorion claims 400 dollars was given to each resident of that community, and it would go a long way in assisting residents in Pelican Narrows.

Local RCMP officers are keeping an eye on the situation.

PBCN chief Ron Michel was not immediately available for comment.
