The Onion Lake First Nation honoured over 100 of the band’s “foundational builders” at a gala on the reserve last night.
Those recognized include past chiefs, band councillors and administrators.
Chief Wallace Fox says the band wanted to thank the people who first ran things on the reserve when it broke away from Indian Affairs’ control in the 1970s.
Fox also doesn’t feel it’s right to wait until a person’s funeral to talk about their contributions.
He says the band has prospered to the point where it plans to provide a $300 pre-Christmas payment to each band member next week.
