Beatty Hopes New Posting Will Make A Difference

NDP cabinet minister Joan Beatty says she is looking forward to spending more time in the North.

Beatty was recently handed the portfolio of Northern Affairs — ending her stint as minister of Culture, Youth and Recreation.

Beatty says roads will be one of her top priorities, but so will the issue of jurisdiction on reserves.

She says an example of the problems that exist in that area is in the allocation of program dollars in northern Saskatchewan.

Beatty notes sometimes provincial funding isn’t allowed on reserves because it is considered federal territory.

Sorting out issues like these are some of the challenges she expects to face.
