Northern Affairs Minister Buckley Belanger has been busy trying to explain why his travel expenses shot up in the last fiscal year.

According to a recently-released update of public accounts, Belanger racked up just under $124,000 in travel claims last year.

That represents an increase of almost 40 per cent from the previous year.

The Saskatchewan Party and the Canadian Taxpayers Federation have been demanding answers.

Belanger says progress was made on a number of long-standing issues in northern Saskatchewan in the last year, and that required more travel.

He says examples include the announcement of the road link between La Loche and Fort McMurray and the economic development package announced for four northwest Saskatchewan Métis communities.
