A First Nations lawyer from Saskatchewan was honoured by a national panel of legal experts at a gala in Toronto last night.
Paul Favel is originally from the Poundmaker First Nation and currently works for the McKercher law firm in Saskatoon.
Favel was honoured as one of Canada’s Rising Stars and a Leading Lawyer under 40, in part for his work with the Whitecap Dakota First Nation on the Dakota Dunes casino and golf course.
He was the only lawyer from Saskatchewan among the young lawyers across the country to be recognized.
Selection criteria was based on the size and complexity of files handled, demonstrated leadership, contributions to firm profitability, business acumen, adaptability to change and teamwork.
He says his upbringing on the Poundmaker reserve helped make him who he is today.
Favel has worked closely with First Nations governments and organizations throughout Saskatchewan and across the country, and continues to assist clients with economic development projects, governance initiatives, Treaty Land Entitlement and specific claims trusts.
