By-Election Advance Poll Turnout Relatively Low

Despite a modest turnout at advance by-election polls in the Desnethe-Missinipi-Churchill River riding, Elections Canada says there is no indication that will continue through to the main polling.

Last weekend, an estimated 850 ballots were cast through advance polls in the northern riding — a far cry from the 2,365 advance ballots cast in the general election held in January 2006.

Elections Canada spokesman Roger Francis doesn’t believe the new voter identification requirements will play much of a role in voter turnout.

The regular polls open Monday.
