A chief from northwest Saskatchewan is calling on the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations to create a year which specifically honours First Nations children.

Chief Helen Ben of the Makwa Sahgaiehcan First Nation says her idea sprung out of this year’s designation as the Year of the First Nations Woman.

During last week’s FSIN assembly in Saskatoon, Ben called on the organization to create a Year of the First Nations Child.

Ben says she’s not sure whether the theme of a child has ever been attempted by the federation, but she believes now is the time to be promoting child welfare.

Ben maintains her idea enjoys strong support within her community.

However, she says it’s up to the FSIN to turn the idea into a reality.
