A few northerners walked away with some hardware over the weekend at the inaugural “Heart of the Metis Awards” ceremony in Saskatoon.
Metis National Council president Clem Chartier, originally from Buffalo Narrows, won the Foundation Award for his work over the years in advancing the cause of the Metis people.
Cumberland House resident Solomon Carriere won the Challenger Award for his efforts at deepening the public’s perception of Metis culture.
Another resident of Cumberland House, Charlie Fosseneuve, was honoured for his countless years of service to the country as a veteran.
Other winners include the Prince Albert Parkland Health region as Best Employer, the Batoche Cultural Centre’s Mark Callette as Best Guide, Shirley Isbister as Best Volunteer and Jeremy Trottier, who was recognized for his recent graduation from a METSI training program.
Awards show organizer Shelley Bettig says approximately 300 people turned up for the ceremony.
