Churchill River Gathering In Full Swing
Thursday, August 17, 2006 at 13:40
The 2006 edition of the Churchill River Gathering is underway in Stanley Mission.
Several dignitaries were on hand for this morning’s opening ceremonies.
Organizers anticipate as many as 250 visitors will descend on the northern community for the four-day outdoor event.
The general purpose of the gathering is to discuss how to revitalize the trapping industry by talking about northern issues that have a tie to fur harvesting.
Government and industry officials will be on hand for question-and-answer sessions on topics like forestry, mining, outfitting and treaty rights.
Stanley Mission band councillor Brian Hardlotte is fairly certain the province’s controversial forest fire policy will be brought up at some point.
Several northern leaders have complained that the policy that allows Saskatchewan Environment to observe some fires without taking immediate action has resulted in the unnecessary and preventable loss of numerous trap lines this summer.
