Cluff Lake Road Block Continues Despite Progress

The Chief of the Clearwater River Dene Nation has announced that a roadblock on highway 955 to the Cluff Lake Uranium Mine will remain standing.

Chief Roy Cheecham met with officials from Cogema Resources yesterday in La Ronge to discuss the major issues surrounding the road-block.

The dispute centres around the decomissioning of the mine and the way in which contracts were handed out.

Cheechum and others in the La Loche region are unhappy with the lack of jobs and contracts directed to the band by Cogema, prompting them to set up the roadblock last Friday.

Cheechum says he wants to see more initiative from the provincial government to help end the dispute, and has left a message for northern affairs minister Buckley Belanger.

He adds progress is being made towards a resolution but the blockade will still stay up for now.
