A trial has been ordered for a Prince Albert man accused of killing a 16-year-old girl from the Montreal Lake Cree Nation.
Cody Halkett, 19, sat quietly while Judge Hugh Harradence ruled there is enough evidence to warrant a trial at Queen’s Bench.
Halkett was charged earlier this year after the body of the teenager was found outside a business near Second Avenue West in Prince Albert.
The judge found that while there are no eyewitnesses to link Halkett to the crime, there is enough circumstantial evidence to warrant a trial.
Speaking outside the courthouse, Halkett’s lawyer Rick Bell, said the lack of direct evidence is important to consider.
“In so far as the Crown presented its case in the preliminary inquiry, there’s no direct evidence that Mr. Halkett was involved in any violent activity with respect to the deceased that night,” Bell says.
A bail hearing will take place for Halkett on Feb. 2, 2010.
He will stay behind bars until then.
