Fast-Track Compensation A Go, But When?

The chief of the Assembly of First Nations says fast-track payments will be made to elderly survivors of residential schools.

During a press conference yesterday, Phil Fontaine made it clear the measure was included in the Conservative government’s plans.

The Tories have been accused of being vague on that issue ever since they announced they would proceed with the residential schools compensation agreement.

However, Fontaine cautions there is no set timeframe for the payouts to go out.

He points out parliamentary approval must be granted before that process gets underway.

Fontaine also says he believes the money is protected from clawbacks by all of the provinces.
