Flooding Causes Big Headache At Cigar Lake

An investigation is underway into a flooding mishap at the Cigar Lake uranium operation.

The flooding of a shaft that was to be used primarily for underground ventilation during production will set back construction of the mine by six months.

It’s also expected to cost Cameco anywhere from $50 million to $100 million.

But Cameco spokesman Lyle Krahn says it won’t force any layoffs at the mine site.

He says it is still not clear if human error was to blame, or if it was simply an equipment malfunction.

The mine is now expected to be in operation by late 2007.
