FNUC Announces Budget Cuts To Deal With Deficit

The First Nations University of Canada is making some budget cuts to deal with a forecasted deficit this fiscal year.

FNUC has a deficit of $1.1 million from last year, and was forecasting a deficit of just over $1 million for this year.

There will be administrative cuts to reduce this year’s deficit to $110,000 and make the overall debt around $1.25 million.

Those measures include not filling 10 vacant positions which were budgeted, merging departments, as well as a travel and management freeze.

So far, programming has not been cut.

FNUC had hoped for additional government funding to raise its faculty’s wages to bring them to parity with those at the University of Regina.

Historically, the institution received top-up funding from the Department of Indian and Northern Affairs Canada — but hasn’t for the past two years.

INAC and the provincial government requested a business plan, which the university says it has provided.

FNUC is hoping to negotiate sustainable long-term funding from both governments in the near future.
