The Fond du Lac First Nation Development Corporation has officially taken over operations of the Fond du Lac port facility.
The transfer of responsibility from Transport Canada took effect on Friday.
With it, the local First Nation has been given $50,000 to offset initital operating costs, such as repairs and ongoing maintenance.
The Fond du Lac port facility includes an approach and a wharf.
Prince Albert MP Brian Fitzpatrick says having this facility run by local people who best know its role in the community — and its potential for growth — will allow it to function in a more commercial and cost-effective manner.
