A national Native leader is hoping the winds of change in the United States will prompt some changes in Canada.
Phil Fontaine of the Assembly of First Nations says he hopes US president-elect Barack Obama signs onto the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
Fontaine says the move would send a strong signal to Indigenous people everywhere, as well as the Canadian government.
The US and Canada were among the few countries that refused to endorse the declaration.
