Forest Fires Cutting Off Supply Lines

A spokesman for uranium mining giant Areva says forest fires have affected the company’s operation at McClean Lake.

Alun Richards says between 100 and 150 workers are at the site extracting ore and working on an expansion to the mine.

However, he says the recent closure of the only highway to the site means supplies are running out.

A large section of Highway 102 has been shut down because of the threat of forest fires.

Richards says workers can fly out if they have to, but the supplies have to come in by truck.

Meantime, some communities north of La Ronge have been having a hard time getting things like fuel and groceries, because their normal supply route has been cut off by the roadblock north of La Ronge.

But Prince Albert Grand Council spokesman Richard Kent says supplies are starting to flow to Southend by alternate means.
