The Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations is welcoming Ottawa’s $2-billion residential school settlement package announced yesterday.

The organization estimates as many as 19,000 claimants may be eligible for the compensation deal in Saskatchewan alone.

FSIN vice chief Morley Watson says with an average settlement package estimated at $20,000 to $30,000, the settlement money should result in a significant bump for

Saskatchewan’s economy.

However, he notes the federal government still hasn’t provided details on some aspects of the plan, including the assessment process and the commission for survivors to tell their stories.

Watson says the FSIN looks forward to hearing more details on those points.
