The Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations is calling for its own school division or urban school.

Vice-chief Delbert Wapass made the announcement earlier this afternoon, saying the province has tried but mostly failed First Nations students in the mainstream system.

Wapass says this type of system would not be segregation and would be open to anyone.

“The Catholic school system is not segregation. The francophone system is not segregation. Right? Whoever wants to go, goes. Whoever wants to come to this First Nations urban high school or urban school system, who wants to be part of it, the doors are open,” he says.

Wapass would not comment on how much he expects this to cost, saying it likely wouldn’t cost more than what it is now by setting back First Nations students.

He hopes to have something in place within a year.
