Green Party Calls for Change in Forestry Practices

The role of forestry and its benefits to the provincial economy are becoming hot topics to provincial election candidates in the riding of Saskatchewan Rivers.
Just days ago, Saskatchewan Party incumbent Daryl Wiberg went on record saying the provincial government should expedite the protocols operators are forced to go through when trying to harvest woodlands burned out by forest fires.
However, Gerald Regnitter of the New Green Alliance says the industry should be re-thinking its entire strategy for doing business.
He says the practice of clear-cutting timber beside lakes hurts the tourism industry and does damage to other industries like mushroom harvesting. He says communities around Big River could lose a lot if current harvesting procedures aren’t altered.
