Highways Dept. Explains Highway 2 Snow Removal

An explanation is being given as to why the highway from Prince Albert to La Ronge routinely has rough stretches during the winter.
Allan Gutka is the Department of Highways’ snowplow operations supervisor for the Prince Albert area.
Gutka says the section of Highway 2 from Christopher Lake to Weyakwin is exposed to more moisture than normal — creating more snow and ice conditions.
He also says his Prince Albert-based crews are responsible for cleaning the highway all the way up to Weyakwin.
Gutka says a base of operations in Weyakwin would certainly allow crews to make a quicker response after snowstorms.
Gutka notes there used to be a plow station in Timber Cove, but the government shut that down a few years ago and he doesn’t know why.
Having said that, Gutka insists Highway 2 is one of the roads that’s given top priority when his crews have to decide which highway to clear first.
