An official with Indian Affairs says the department is taking steps to improve the financial outlook at the Island Lake First Nation.

Noreen Kotowich says the band has been moved into third party management after its operating deficit exceeded an acceptable level and its co-manager resigned.

She says the firm of BDO Dunwoody has been appointed to help the band balance its books and get things running smoothly again.

Kotowich notes the department received complaints from reserve residents that the chief and council weren’t keeping band members informed regarding Island Lake’s financial situation.

She says the third party manager will change that situation almost immediately.

BDO Dunwoody says the manager will be traveling to the reserve three days a week.
