La Ronge RCMP Challenge MP’s Call For More Police

Yorkton-Melville MP Garry Breitkreuz claims La Ronge doesn’t have enough RCMP officers patrolling the community, but the commanding officer of the La Ronge detachment says those claims are dated and false.
Staff Sergeant Kirk Munro says the number of criminal incidents per officer for La Ronge in Breitkreuz’ report may seem high because the La Ronge RCMP patrol four jurisdictions, including Stanley Mission.
Munro admits La Ronge is one of the busiest places in the province in terms of police workload, but he’s convinced the 26 members on staff are enough for community members to feel safe and secure.
Munro notes Breitkreuz’ research was conducted two years ago, and since then, the RCMP has hired an additional two officers to patrol La Ronge and area.
He also says adding police officers is not the only way to bring the crime rate down, and believes it should be a community effort in crime prevention.
