A rash of break-and-enters in La Ronge has the RCMP on the lookout, and some residents re-thinking home security.

According to the RCMP’s spokesperson, Sgt. Carole Raymond, there have been about 50 break-and-enters in the community over the past two months, with 23 or so coming in November.

Raymond says the Mounties believe the incidents are related.

“Certainly in the past, when you see that there’s a rash, it usually means that there is a group of individuals who are committing the break-and-enters. So it’s a high probability that once you catch that one or two (or) three persons who are doing this, they usually will admit to doing the 20 or 30 b and e’s,” she says.

Local resident Bryan Orthner had his home broken into on Sunday, while he and his wife were out of town.

The home was ransacked, and the couple’s vehicle was taken, using keys grabbed during the home invasion.

Orthner says that while it doesn’t appear much was taken from inside the house, the loss of the vehicle was a huge hit.

“The first thing was when we realized the car was gone. We both work; my wife is six months pregnant. Losing your car in those circumstances, knowing that it’s going to be a while before you can replace it, even if insurance pays for the car — here in La Ronge, your options for buying a new car are limited. It means trips to the city to do car shopping. It’s just a massive headache,” he says.

Police say that they are continuing to investigate.
