First Nations people played a large part in a celebration this morning at the Saskatchewan Legislature in Regina.

The marking of the 100th anniversary of the first sitting of the Legislative Assembly in the province focused on the role of First Nations people in the foundation of Saskatchewan.

There was also recognition given to the special treaty relationship between First Nations and government.

Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations vice-chief Guy Lonechild says this was a historic event, because it highlighted the treaty relations between First Nations people and the province of Saskatchewan.

Several Aboriginal dignitaries, elders, drummers and community groups were on hand for the presentation of a traditionally crafted Mace to the Legislature.

Special guests that attended today’s ceremony included FSIN chief Alphonse Bird and Treaty Commissioner David Arnot, among others.
