LLRIB Chief Meets With SaskTel About Bush Radio

The chief of the Lac La Ronge Indian Band met yesterday with officials from the provincial government to talk more about the northern two-way radio situation.
The meeting took place in Saskatoon during the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations’ special legislative assembly.
Tammy Cook-Searson and two of her councillors talked to cabinet ministers Joan Beatty and Maynard Sonntag about what would be lost through the removal of the two-way radio system.
SaskTel has applied to the CRTC to discontinue the service in the New Year.
The chief says officials with SaskTel were present at the gathering and key questions were raised.
Cook-Searson says both sides laid out their positions during the meeting, but nothing concrete was decided.
She says the band simply isn’t comfortable with the thought of seeing the radio system go, unless another option is firmly in place — one that is viable for northerners.
