LLRIB Election Appeal Results Challenged In Court

The chief electoral officer for the Lac La Ronge Indian band says it might be the fall before the fate of two band councillors is known.
Yesterday, a chief and council meeting took place concerning the status of band councillors Larry Roberts and John Halkett.
They are fighting to keep their positions after an election appeal officer ruled they both filled out their nomination forms incorrectly in the most recent band election.
Charles Whitecap says it was learned at yesterday’s meeting that Roberts has filed an appeal in federal court against Lucky Man Chief Pauline Okemow’s decision.
He says, until the court renders its ruling, the band won’t rule on the councillors’ status.
However, Whitecap says they aren’t receiving a pay cheque right now, and their positions are basically considered void.
Roberts says Okemow made errors in her ruling.
He also has concerns that the decision wasn’t made by someone more familiar with the band’s election act.
Whitecap says it could be two to six months before the court deals with the matter.
