La Ronge’s new mayor wants the public to know he’s working closely with the local RCMP to address the rash of break-ins the town has been hit with since early October.

Thomas Sierzycki says he met one-on-one with RCMP Staff Sergeant Rick Miller earlier this afternoon, and was assured that the force is getting “the upper hand” on the situation.

Sierzycki says that even as the RCMP continue to investigate leads and work to stop the criminals, there are steps the public and the municipality can take as well.

“Obviously I’m concerned for our residents. As a resident of La Ronge, I’m as well concerned. The big thing is people remembering to close their doors, hide things, make sure that they’re being smart about things, such as locking windows, not keeping valuables open in their vehicles. Hopefully that can decrease. That’s not an excuse — we’ll maintain that RCMP force continues to police and have a pro-active measure, and we as a municipality will take it very seriously and try to figure out what we can do from our end,” he says.

Sierzycki is hopeful that more steps can be taken soon, such as the establishment of a volunteer Citizens on Patrol group to assist the police with sweeps of the community.
