A memorial service has been set for the six-year-old boy who went missing in Sandy Bay.
The community called off the search Sunday, after the river that it is presumed the boy fell into began to freeze over more, making it treacherous to navigate.
Mike Morin, a member of the northern village’s search and rescue team, says that over the years, incidences like this have become a painful reality in the community.
“For our community, it’s always tough, but that’s just something over the years we’ve grown to adapt to. We’re right adjacent to the Churchill River, and it’s fast-flowing water, so any time in the wintertime when somebody usually falls in the water, it’s usually a slim chance of recovery,” Morin says.
The memorial service is set for Friday in Pinehouse, because of the boy’s ties to that community.
