The Liberal candidate in the federal riding of Desnethe-Missinippi-Churchill River riding says he will work towards a settlement agreement for the survivors of the Metis residential school in Ile-a-la-crosse.

Many of those former students have launched a class-action lawsuit to get compensated, now that the government has indicated they don’t qualify.

Gary Merasty says the Ile-a-la-crosse survivors should be included in the compensation agreement announced recently, because their experiences are similar to the ones the First Nations survivors faced at Indian residential schools.

Merasty says if he wins the election for the northern constituency, he would put a priority on finding out what needs to be done to include Ile-a-la-Crosse in the deal.
