Metis Call for Resolution of Hunting Negotiations

The Metis National Council says it’s time governments across Canada finalized negotiations on Metis hunting rights.
Clem Chartier points out that it’s been 11 months since the Supreme Court issued its landmark Powley decision.
Chartier says Metis leaders preached patience to Metis hunters when the ruling first came down, but he says the Metis will not continue to “skulk through the forests like criminals”.
And while Chartier is pleased with the progress being made on this issue in Alberta and Ontario, he says there needs to be mutually agreeable harvesting agreements in place across the country in time for the fall.
Chartier also says he has written commitments from environment ministers across Canada to hold a meeting on Metis hunting. He’s optimistic the meeting can be held in late September.
