Metis Plan To Mark Land Scrip Centennial

The Northwest Saskatchewan Metis Council is planning to commemorate next year as the 100th year since the signing of Metis land scrip and the signing of Treaty 10.
Council co-chair Philip Chartier says a Centennial Aboriginal Organizing Committee has been struck to plan activities throughout the year.
He says invitations are being sent out to dignitaries everywhere, including the Prime Minister and the Queen, in the hopes they might attend.
Chartier says they are looking at holding special events in both Ile-a-la-Crosse and La Loche because that’s where Metis land scrip was signed.
He expects they will be major tourist attractions in northwest Saskatchewan next year.
The celebrations will be open to everyone, and organizers hope Metis, First Nations and friends of the Metis all come together to mark the special event.
Chartier says another important aspect of the event will be making sure Metis youth realize what the occasion is all about, and how it affects them.
The Metis council will finalize and publicize the celebrations agenda early in 2006, including the theme.
Chartier is hoping to find partners for the event and encourages anyone who feels they have something to offer to contact the Northwest Saskatchewan Metis Council.
