The House of Commons has unanimously adopted a motion calling on the federal government to use 2010 to recognize the contributions of the Métis Nation to all aspects of Canadian society.

The motion was tabled yesterday by Saskatchewan Liberal MP Ralph Goodale.

It also calls on the federal government to use 2010 to commemorate the 125th anniversary of the historic events of 1885 in Saskatchewan.

Goodale says Parliament has a duty to honour the past and give tribute to the tremendous contributions of the Métis Nation to the development of this country.

Goodale’s motion reads: “That, in the opinion of the House, the government should utilize next year, 2010, to commemorate the Year of the Métis in recognition of the 125th anniversary of the historic events of 1885 in Saskatchewan; and further, the government should recognize and celebrate the invaluable contributions of the Métis Nation across Canada which have enriched the lives of all Canadians socially, economically, politically and culturally.”

The Saskatchewan Legislature adopted a similar motion earlier in the year.
