NLSD Chair Troubled By Education Spending Freeze

The chair of the Northern Lights School Division says he’s concerned about a government spending freeze.

On Dec. 8, provincial Finance minister Rod Gantefoer announced that the province would limit spending, in the face of collapsing potash prices.

That news is tough to handle for NLSD board chair Larry Ahenakew.

Ahenakew says the school division has approximately 4,000 students currently enrolled, with approximately 150 more entering the system each year.

Ahenakew says the decision is made even more difficult when you consider the government has removed the school division’s ability to govern rates on education property tax.

Ahenakew is encouraging parents to write a letter to their local MLA to express any concerns.
