North Receives Recreational Infrastructure Funds

Details have been released about how the North will benefit from a new government program designed to improve cultural and recreational infrastructure.

$2 million has been earmarked for the Northern Sport, Culture and Recreation District under the provincial government’s $100-million Building Communities Program.

Community Resources Minister Buckley Belanger says given the unique and challenging circumstances of northern Saskatchewan, the program has established separate criteria that recognize the needs of northern communities.

Northern project applications may qualify for funding if they are less than $1 million in total cost — unlike proposals in southern Saskatchewan.

As well, the total cost of northern projects that qualify may be covered. In the rest of the province, up to 25 per cent of the cost will be covered.
