Northern Chiefs Plot Duty To Consult Strategy

First Nations chiefs in northern Saskatchewan gathered in Meadow Lake yesterday to prepare for an upcoming duty to consult roundtable discussion.

First Nations, Metis and provincial government representatives will meet in Saskatoon on May 12th and 13th to try to hammer out how the government’s duty to consult and accommodate will work in this province.

After meeting for more than three hours, the chiefs decided the best thing to do is get more input from their communities.

Meadow Lake Tribal Council Chief Helen Ben says it’s a big issue, because band leaders want to preserve the land — but they also want to provide jobs for their people.

The chiefs will meet again at least once more before next month’s meeting with the provincial government.
