Northern Hunters Asked to Turn in Deer Heads

The head of wildlife management for Saskatchewan Environment is asking northern hunters to turn in their deer heads — even though no cases of Chronic Wasting Disease have been detected in the North.

Don McKinnon says four new cases of the disease were found this fall, and while they’re all based in the Swift Current and Lloydminster areas, the department feels it’s better to be safe than sorry.

McKinnon says the compliance factor among hunters has been good this year as evidenced by the 17 hundred heads that have been turned in already.

Only about a thousand had made their way to environment offices at this time last year.
