Youth are playing a big part in the Northern Justice Symposium which got underway in Prince Albert this morning.

The three-day gathering is being hosted by New North and has brought together representatives from northern First Nations and municipalities, the provincial government, the Corrections Service of Canada, the RCMP and other agencies.

A youth forum is taking place today.

Youth representatives will also be participating in a forum on the future of justice in northern Saskatchewan on Friday.

As well, several young people will be presented with Northern Youth Awards of Excellence at a noon ceremony tomorrow.

New North chair Dale McAuley says the gathering represents a chance for those in power to hear directly from northern youth on issues northern leaders have been trying to raise for years.

McAuley says both northern leaders and youth agree that northern Saskatchewan needs a youth drug and alcohol treatment centre and a youth healing lodge or correctional facility.
