A northern leader admits he’s concerned about a recent report regarding the environmental effects Alberta’s oilsands are having in northern Saskatchewan.

On Friday, the group Environmental Defence released a report, calling the oilsands the “most destructive project on Earth”.

It also stated that 70 per cent of the emissions created by the oilsands are finding their way into northern Saskatchewan, causing acid rain to fall in the region.

Buffalo Narrows Mayor Bobby Woods says the issue needs to be looked at carefully.

However, Woods says it doesn’t dampen his enthusiasm about the potential economic benefits his region can reap from Alberta’s tar sands, and the oilsands potential in this province.

According to the report, Saskatchewan Environment has confirmed that northern lakes and rivers have higher acid levels today than previous years.

The Opposition wants to know if the Saskatchewan Party government has continued talks the previous NDP government initiated with Alberta about limiting oilsands emissions drifting into this province.
