Premier Meets With Northern Mayors In Regina

About half a dozen northern mayors are having a roundtable discussion with ten provincial cabinet ministers in Regina today.

Premier Lorne Calvert also took part in the meeting for approximately 30 minutes this morning.

The get-together is being chaired by Northern Affairs Minister Joan Beatty.

A spokesman for Labour Minister David Forbes confirms part of today’s discussion will deal with New North’s concern over the northern overtime exemption in provincial labour laws.

However, that issue is expected to be only a part of a broader dialogue.

The exemption allows companies to not pay overtime to workers that are employed in any northern community outside of La Ronge, Creighton and Uranium City.

Northern leaders have called the legislation discriminatory.
