Red Earth Man Pleads Guilty In Whitehead Killing

An 18-year-old man from the Red Earth First Nation has pleaded guilty to second degree murder in the death of a man on the reserve two years ago.

The man, who was a young offender at the time of the killing, was charged in December 2007, after the body of 22-year-old Brant Ellery Whitehead was found on the Red Earth reserve, three days after he was last seen leaving a bar in Nipawin.

Regional Crown prosecutor Tom Healey confirms that the accused entered a guilty plea Monday in Melfort Court of Queen’s Bench.

The man will be back in court on Jan. 28, when the Crown and defence will submit their recommendations for sentencing to the judge.

The youth’s co-accused, Timothy Troy Young, is still awaiting trial, while a second co-accused, who was also 16 at the time, was convicted after a trial and sentenced in August to a year in jail.
