A new report shows that 85 per cent of male prostitutes in Saskatchewan are young and of Aboriginal ancestry.
“Under the Radar: The Sexual Exploitation of Young Men” is a report that takes a look at the seldom talked about world of male prostitution.
Dr. Susan McIntyre completed the study by doing interviews in Saskatoon and Regina in 2006.
McIntrye says most of the people in the trade are Aboriginal boys and young men catering to a customer base that consists mostly of middle-class to upper-class white men.
She says the over-representation of the Aboriginal population in the male sex trade may have something to do with the legacy of the residential schools.
McIntyre hopes that the findings in her study will lead to more programming aimed at men working in the sex trade
