Residential School Survivor Hotline a Hit

Just over a year since its launch, a nation-wide support line for survivors of residential schools is reporting a noticeable increase in calls.

Sharon Thira is the executive director of the Indian Residential School Survivors support line.

She says when it first started last September, counsellors generally received between 25 and 30 calls a month.

That number has now tripled to 150 calls a month.

Thira says one of the reasons why she thinks the service is so well-received is because callers can talk to someone who knows firsthand what it’s like to attend a residential school.

She adds the support line is free to use and staffed around the clock all week.

The number to call is 1-866-925-4419.
