Residential School Survivors Get Rejection Letters

A Regina-based lawyer is confirming that some residential school survivors he represents are having trouble collecting early payments from the federal government.

Tony Merchant says several students have received rejection letters in the mail.

He’s not sure of the exact number of letters that have been sent out, but he claims most are for petty reasons.

Merchant notes many former students have received rejection letters because of clerical mistakes or slight errors on their application form.

Merchant says other students are receiving notice the government has no record of them ever being at a residential school.

He says he and other lawyers are trying to iron the difficulties out.

Merchant also advises anyone who did get rejected to seek legal advice.
