Members of the Hatchet Lake First Nation are into their second day of voting today.
None of the five candidates for chief managed to capture the necessary majority of votes to be declared the winner in yesterday’s band election.
Two names have been dropped for today’s second ballot — Genevieve Besskkaystare and J.B. Tsannie.
The candidates still in the running are incumbent chief Louie Josie and former councillors Ed Benoanie and Bart Tsannie.
Josie captured 165 votes in yesterday’s vote, but he needed 208 to win. Tsannie had 97 votes, while Benoanie finished with 83.
Meanwhile, the new band council has been selected and it includes four new names. Newcomer Emil Hansen finished with the most votes with 284. He’s joined on council by fellow newcomers Jean Marie Tsannie, Veronique Dzeylion and Emil Dzeylion.
Incumbents George Tsannie and Alec Josie were re-elected to another term.
