SFL President Slams Mining Official’s OT Remarks

A recent interview on MBC has raised the eyebrows of one of Saskatchewan’s most prominent labour leaders.
Saskatchewan Federation of Labour president Larry Hubich says he can’t believe recent comments made by Saskatchewan Mining Association president Phil Reeves on how the northern overtime exemption is generally regarded by workers.
Reeves said the exemption is generally liked, because it allows workers to work one week while taking the next one off.
Hubich says there’s nothing wrong with that type of work schedule, but the miners should still be paid overtime for any extra work they do.
He says firefighters are just one example of professional workers who often work outside the confines of a traditional work week, but who still qualify for overtime.
Hubich worries concerns like these won’t be raised by the SMA when it sits down with the provincial government to discuss the exemption in October.
